HPV & Cancer

Although most forms of HPV self-correct, there are certain high-risk forms that may lead to cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute (NIH), the most common high-risk cancer developing forms of HPV include, HPV 16 and HPV 18 (2015). High-risk HPV cancers account for roughly 5% of all cancers worldwide. In the United States alone, 3% of all cancers among women, and 2% of all cancers among men can be attributed to high-risk HPV (NIH, 2014). Although these statistics seem low, anyone with high-risk strains of HPV are still at risk for developing cancer later on in life. There are several different types of cancers associated with HPV, these include: cervical, anal, oropharyngeal, vaginal, vulvar, and penile cancers.

 Cancer Statistics
  • Cervical Cancer. Research shows that nearly all cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV. HPV types 16 and 18 seem to be responsible for roughly 70% of all cases (NIH, 2015).
  • Anal Cancer. Statistics have shown that roughly 95% of all anal cancers are caused by HPV. HPV type 16 is responsible for most of these cancers (NIH, 2015).
  • Oropharyngeal Cancer. Research shows that about 70% of oral cancers are caused by HPV. More than half of oral cancers diagnosed in the United States are caused by HPV strain 16 (NIH, 2015).
  • Other Cancers. HPV has also been linked to several other cancers. HPV accounts for about 65% of vaginal cancers, 50% of vulvar cancers, and 35% of penile cancers. Research shows that each of these cancers can be linked to HPV type 16 (NIH, 2015).

Cancer Screening
The most common cancer associated with HPV is cervical cancer (NIH, 2014). Cervical Cancer screening is normally a part of most women’s routine health care and is used to detect abnormal cell growth, precancerous lesions, and cancer. Screening for cervical cancer includes two type of tests. These include a Pap smear and HPV testing. A pap smear is a female pelvic exam that is used to detect abnormal cells, infections and inflammation.  HPV testing is used to screen for the presence of high-risk HPV strains in cells.  The use of automated liquid-based pap testing has also begun to takeover in the United States. These liquid-based tests are able to screen for possible cancerous growth and HPV from the same sample (NIH, 2014).
Stages of Cervical Cancer
It is recommended that women have their first Pap smear test at the age of 21. Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should be screened for cervical cancer every three years. Whereas women between the ages of 30 and 65 should be screened every 5 years (NIH, 2014). It is also important to remember that not all HPV vaccines protect against all types of HPV, therefore it is important for all vaccinated women to still adhere to routine testing. Unfortunately little is known about the effects of HPV and cancer in men, and there are currently no screening guidelines or tests available.
