What Is HPV?
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), is one of the most common
types of sexually transmitted infections. So common in fact, that nearly all
sexually active men and women contact the virus at some point in their lives.
There are over 100 different forms of the HPV virus present today (2017). These can
range from high risk strains that cause cancer, to low risk strains that may
cause genital warts or show no sign of symptoms. Thankfully, most HPV infections
can resolve on their own, however, it is important to get tested, as HPV can
remain in the body and spread to other sexual partners. There is currently no
treatment available for the HPV virus (CDC, 2017). How Does HPV Spread?
Anyone who is sexually active can get HPV. The HPV virus can
enter the body through cuts, abrasions, and small tears in the skin. The most
common method of infection is skin-to-skin contact through sexual intercourse (CDC, 2017).
HPV is commonly spread through vaginal and anal intercourse, although it can be
transmitted through oral sex as well. It is important to remember that a person
living with HPV may show no signs or symptoms of infection, however, they can
still transmit the infection to their sexual partners.
Symptoms of HPV
According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of HPV are often mild. The most common include
itching and warts (2016). Genital warts can appear around the anus, female vagina or
the male penis/scrotum. These warts appear as flat lesions or small
cauliflower-like bumps. Other warts include common warts (hands, and elbows),
plantar warts (bottom of feet) and flat warts (face, legs, etc.) Other symptoms also

Since HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted
infections, there are several risk factors associated with the virus, these
include:
- Number of sexual partners. The more sexual partners a person has, the more likely they are to be infected with HPV. Also, having sex with a person who has had multiple sexual partners can increase your risk of infection (2016).
- High risk sexual behaviors. Persons who engage in high risk sexual behaviors are more likely to contract the virus. High risk sexual activity includes unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, and oral), men who have sex with men, and multiple sex partners at once.
- Weak immune systems. Persons with weakened immune systems (caused by chronic illness, cancer, HIV/AIDS, etc.) are also at a greater risk for contracting the disease. A weak immune system is not able to effectively fight off the virus which may lead to other complications (2016).
- Age. Adolescents (ages 11-24) and the elderly (65 years and older) population are at the greatest risk of contracting the virus.
- Other factors. Other factors of contracting the HPV virus include: damaged skin, touching the warts of someone infected with HPV without protection, or being in contact with surfaces that have been exposed to HPV (such as public showers, swimming pools, etc.) (2016).

I am not sure of the cause of COPD emphysema in my case. I smoked pack a day for 12 or 13 years, but quit 40 years ago. I have been an outdoor person all my adult life.
