Preventing HPV
HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections today. Currently there are 20 million people living with HPV, and an estimated 6 million people will become infected by the end of the year (Fields, 2016) . However, there are several steps that you can take to decrease the likelihood of infection, they include the following:
- Abstinence. The only way to completely reduce the likelihood of infection is by abstaining from all sexual intercourse. This includes, anal, vaginal, and oral sex. HPV is mostly transmitted by skin-to-skin sexual contact, and abstaining from sex will dramatically reduce your risk of infection.
- Limiting Sexual Partners. It is important to limit the number of sexual partners that you have as well. Research shows that approximately and 8 month period between sexual partners can help to limit the transmission of HPV and allow the infection to leave the body if contracted (Fields, 2016).
- Using Condoms. HPV is spread by skin-to-skin contact, the use of condoms will not eliminate the risk of infection, however, it can help to reduce the risk of infection. Condoms also help to protect against other commonly transmitted infections such as HIV, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
- Avoiding Warts. Avoid any sexual activity with someone who is infected with genital warts. It is important to also protect yourself from surfaces that may have been exposed to the virus. For example, take caution when using public showers by wearing shower shoes and avoiding direct contact with shower surfaces.
- Circumcision. Current research shows that men who have been circumcised, had the foreskin of their penis removed, have a lower risk of contracting the HPV infection. Circumcised males also reduce the risk of infection for their female counterparts (Fields, 2016).
According to the CDC, the best way to protect against the HPV infection is to get vaccinated (2017). Currently there are three vaccines that have been approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These include Cervarix (girls only) Gardasil, and Gardasil 9 (boys and girls). Research shows that Gardasil 9 protects against more strains of HPV that cause cervical cancers than other vaccinations (CDC, 2017). All vaccination can protect boys and girls from cancer if given before he or she is exposed to the virus. Vaccinations can also help to prevent genital warts in men and women.

It is recommended that boys and
girls between the ages of 11 and 12 receive routine HPV vaccinations. The
vaccines should be administered in two doses, at least six months apart. If a
person receives the vaccine at a later age, 15 through 26, it is recommended
that the vaccine be administered in three doses, at least six months apart (CDC, 2016). Persons
who are pregnant, ill, or allergic to any ingredients in the vaccine should not
get vaccinated.
The HPV vaccine is also
recommended for persons who are already sexually active. There are over 100
different strains of HPV, so even if you already have one form of HPV, the
vaccine can still protect you from other strains (CDC, 2017). Below is an additional video that further explores whether or not you or your family members should receive the vaccination.
